Our EDI Strategic Lead for Liberty Academy Trust

Dr Nicola Crossley, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging Strategic Lead

Because our schools are special schools, people expect that inclusion (in its widest sense) automatically occurs. It’s not always the case. Inequity exists in society; why would schools be immune? Our pupils are some of the most vulnerable in society – not because they can’t achieve success – but because they need a focused approach to education that enables them to be successful both academically and pastorally. And our staff also bring protected characteristics and varied lived experience with them too, which need to be recognised and supported, so it’s about creating a community where people with lived differences can thrive.

Inclusion is never a destination; the make-up of staff, families, and pupils continues to evolve, and therefore the Trust’s policies and practice must continue to evolve too. It’s hard to get it perfect, but from where we’ve come from to where we are now, I’m really, really pleased and proud of our progress!
